Overview:

Sullenberger Aviation Museum (SAM) aims to inspire, educate, and elevate the next generation to pursue careers in STEM, aerospace, and aviation. SAM invites the community to explore the vast contributions of aviation in our lives, economy, and culture. The new museum, developed in partnership with Charlotte-Douglas International (CLT) Airport, will open in the summer of 2024. SAM is seeking enthusiastic, dedicated volunteers to join our team!

As a Volunteer Makerspace Assistant at our state-of-the-art aviation museum, you will play a pivotal role in providing visitors with a hands-on and interactive experience, allowing them to explore aviation principles through creative and engaging activities. Your dedication to hospitality, exceptional customer service, and commitment to creating memorable experiences for museum visitors will contribute to the overall enjoyment and educational value of their visit. If you have a passion for aviation, excellent communication skills, and enjoy fostering a collaborative learning environment, this position offers the opportunity to inspire curiosity and innovation.

Responsibilities:
  • Facilitate Hands-On Activities:
    • Engage visitors in interactive experiences within the Makerspace, including engineering projects, scientific experimentation, and more.
    • Provide assistance and instruction to ensure a safe and enjoyable experience for participants of all ages.
  • Maintain Makerspace Environment:
    • Help maintain organized workspace between visitors and activities.
    • Prepare Makerspace activity materials, including cutting templates, preparing workstations, and setting out activities for visitors.
  • Safety:
    • Follow and implement museum safety and security protocols, ensuring the well-being of visitors and artifacts.
  • Visitor Interaction:
    • Foster a welcoming and inclusive environment, encouraging creativity and exploration.
    • Lead visitors through the engineering and making process to help reinforce educational goals.
Qualifications:
  • Must be at least 16 years of age
  • Strong passion for aviation and a keen interest in hands-on, experiential learning
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
  • Comfortable working with a variety of age groups
  • Ability to problem-solve and creatively think while working in a busy environment
Preferred Qualifications:
  • A High School diploma or equivalent experience
  • A bachelor's degree or experience in a relevant field (e.g., history, education, or a STEM field)
  • Previous experience in an educational setting or museum environment
  • Familiarity with aviation principles and technology

By telling the story of the people who shaped our aviation heritage, the Sullenberger Aviation Museum inspires future generations to write aviation’s next chapter.

Description

The Sullenberger Aviation Museum has a comprehensive collection of aircraft ,helicopters, equipment, and artifacts, covering years of aviation history. The collection includes US Airwarys Flight 1549 the Miracle on the Hudson, a restored Piedmont DC-3, a full scale replica of the 1903 Wright Flyer, a Delta DC-9, a F-14 Tomcat, a C-130 used during Operation Eagle Claw, and other various historical aircraft. Through our educational programs and interactive displays the museum provides something for all ages.

After 31 years of making history and imagination soar, Sullenberger Aviation Museum has begun an exciting flight into the future! We are currently closed to the public, but are proud to be working with the City of Charlotte, Charlotte Douglas International Airport, and internationally recognized firm Freeman Ryan Design to develop plans for a state-of-the-art new facility.
