ORGANIZATION: Sullenberger Aviation Museum

Overview:

Sullenberger Aviation Museum (SAM) aims to inspire, educate, and elevate the next generation to pursue careers in STEM, aerospace, and aviation. SAM invites the community to explore the vast contributions of aviation in our lives, economy, and culture. The new museum, developed in partnership with Charlotte-Douglas International (CLT) Airport, will open in the summer of 2024. SAM is seeking enthusiastic, dedicated volunteers to join our team!

As a Volunteer Gallery Docent at our state-of-the-art aviation museum, you will play a crucial role in enhancing the visitor experience by providing excellent customer service, creating engaging and informative educational encounters creating memorable experiences for museum visitors will contribute to the overall enjoyment and educational value of their visit. Your passion for aviation, combined with your excellent communication skills, will help bring the history of aviation to life for visitors of all ages. This position offers the opportunity to work in a dynamic environment surrounded by historic aircraft and cutting-edge exhibits.

Responsibilities:
  • Exhibit Knowledge:
    • Develop a deep understanding of the museum's exhibits, including aircraft, artifacts, and exhibits, and stay updated on new additions on display.
    • Learn how to interact with a variety of museum collections and artifacts
    • Share detailed information about aviation history and relevant insights to the current state of the aviation industry using display artifacts and exhibits.
  • Visitor Engagement:
    • Proactively engage in informative and educational discussions with visitors.
    • Support the visitor by answering questions, as well as providing guidance and directions to ensure a positive and memorable museum experience.
    • Foster a welcoming and inclusive environment, catering to diverse audiences.
  • Safety and Security:
    • Follow and implement museum safety and security protocols, ensuring the well-being of visitors and artifacts.

Qualifications:
  • Must be at least 18 years of age.
  • Passion for aviation and a strong interest in aviation history.
  • Excellent communication and public speaking skills.
  • Ability to adapt content for different audiences and age groups.
  • Enthusiastic and engaging personality.
  • Comfortable using technology and multimedia tools.
  • Customer service-oriented with a friendly and approachable demeanor.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • A bachelor's degree or experience in a relevant field (e.g., history, education, or a STEM field)
  • Previous experience in museum education, aviation, or related fields

Description

The Sullenberger Aviation Museum has a comprehensive collection of aircraft ,helicopters, equipment, and artifacts, covering years of aviation history. The collection includes US Airwarys Flight 1549 the Miracle on the Hudson, a restored Piedmont DC-3, a full scale replica of the 1903 Wright Flyer, a Delta DC-9, a F-14 Tomcat, a C-130 used during Operation Eagle Claw, and other various historical aircraft. Through our educational programs and interactive displays the museum provides something for all ages.

After 31 years of making history and imagination soar, Sullenberger Aviation Museum has begun an exciting flight into the future! We are currently closed to the public, but are proud to be working with the City of Charlotte, Charlotte Douglas International Airport, and internationally recognized firm Freeman Ryan Design to develop plans for a state-of-the-art new facility.
