AmeriCorps & Easter Seals South Florida Need YOU on the Respite Team!

My name is Jose Quiroz. I am the Americorps Program Coordinator at Easterseals South Florida.

Easterseals' cause and purpose is to support and strengthen families living with a disability in our community and we do that across many programs, locations and populations. Whether we are helping a young family to overcome the challenges of raising a child with a disability or helping a family struggling to avoid the devastation of a nursing home placement for their loved one with Alzheimer's disease, Easterseals is an indispensable resource for more than 1,500 families here in South Florida. We change the way the world defines and views disability by making profound, positive differences in people's lives every day, helping our clients build the skills and access the resources they need to live, learn, work and play. This heart-felt commitment to helping people with disabilities and their families is what Easter Seals is all about and because of what we do is that we are always looking for motivated and talented individuals who are passionate about our mission and wants to join our exceptional Americorps team.

I am in the phase of recruiting for our next program year that starts on September 1, 2023. As a reference, this is the information about Americorps:

  • Candidate must be US Residents or Citizens, and residents in Miami Dade or Broward Counties
  • It requires 8 hours of volunteering per week, as a companion to an elder adult. The volunteer hours are done at the home of the elder adult, in Dade and Broward Counties.
  • It pays 193 dollars a month as a living allowance.
  • The program is a great match to mature and reliable college students that will commit to it, due to its educational award of $1824 at the end of the service year, after completing the 450 hours
  • Adults over 55 can pass the $1824 educational award to their children and grandchildren
  • Beneficial for individuals that have a family member who is an adult with Alzheimer's or dementia or needs constant supervision. Preference is given to veterans and military families
  • Placement is done considering the volunteer’s geographical location.

A typical day with your client is to spend time accompanying them, as a friendly and caring presence. Time is spent reading, listening to music, chatting, drawing, taking short walks, and any other activity that is pleasant to both the client and to you. We don't do bathroom or bedroom duties. The support is any day of the week from Monday to Sunday and you set your schedule together with your assigned family and
