Do you enjoy meeting new people? Do you love the arts? Do you want to support the arts while creating a positive experience for others?

The Hammer Theatre in Downtown San Jose is looking for folks to join our Volunteer Corps. Volunteers serve as event ushers, taking tickets and assisting patrons inside the theatre during in-person events.

Volunteers are required to complete the San Jose State verification process, including attendance at a yearly 1-2 hour Orientation in person at the theatre . Our next Orientation is Sunday, May 5 at 2pm OR Monday, May 6 at 6pm . You can sign up to attend ONE of these times - or let us know you can't make it this time and we'll be in touch with future dates - here: https://forms.gle/4guFZvXWdKxtmVgU8

After orientation you will complete the SJSU onboarding process. Once complete, you will be able to view and sign up for shifts as you choose. Shift dates and times vary and all verified volunteers are given advance notice of those dates and times and an opportunity to sign up in advance. Most shifts are 3-4 hours and happen in the evening and on weekends.

Volunteer perks include - if space allows - to be inside the theatre and view the show while also keeping aware of any audience needs and a celebration with raffle prizes awarded at the end of each season. Volunteers also may choose to request validated parking at a nearby garage, or take nearby public transportation.

Mission Statement

The Hammer’s mission is to serve the community through works that illustrate the unique culture of creativity, diversity, and innovation in Silicon Valley.

Description

The Hammer Theatre, named after former San José Mayor Susan Hammer and her husband Phil Hammer, a San José Rep Board Trustee, was completed in 1997 via a collaboration between the San José Redevelopment Agency and San José Repertory Theatre Company. This distinctive theatre offered theatrical productions for over seven years for San José and Bay Area patrons and to national acclaim. In March 2016, San José State University reopened the Hammer Theatre as a modern performance venue in the heart of downtown San José. The theatre serves San José’s community and the university through programming that features student, local, and international talent.
