Tool Librarian
ORGANIZATION: HNL TOOL LIBRARY
Please visit the new page to apply.
The HNL Tool Library offers tool loans through the Lending Library program from a 400 square-foot facility within REUSE Hawaii. We serve a diverse community with increasing needs for skills and tools. Volunteers are experienced in giving tool tutorials to new and existing members to ensure tools are used safely and correctly, and answer questions from the community on basic home repair and DIY projects.
Our Tool Librarians serve at the front desk checking in and checking out tools to our members. The Tool Librarians will also inform potential members of the background of the organization as well as membership details. A background in woodworking, metalworking, home repair, 3D printing, sewing, CAD design, are a definite plus but not necassary to volunteer with us!

Mission Statement
HNL Tool Library is a local 501(c)(3) nonprofit dedicated to sustainability, resilience, and community development. At HNL Tool Library, we lend tools like a traditional library lends books. By providing access to a shared inventory of tools, and educating the public about their use, we help our island community maximize resource efficiency, reduce the waste stream, and break down barriers to sustainable living. The HNL Tool Library’s mission is to increase the economic resiliency and environmental sustainability of our community by providing a platform for sharing, education, and skill development. We believe a community is richer and more sustainable when resources are shared, resulting in a stronger society, more resilient economy, and a healthier environment.
Description
Founded in 2015 and serving all of Oahu, HNL Tool Library has completed more than 41,000 tool loans in an effort to reduce the CO2 emissions and resource use associated with manufacturing and distribution. In 2022, volunteers spent more than 3,940 hours repairing, maintaining, and loaning an inventory of 1,500 tools, reducing the amount of waste sent to landfills and providing residents with tools necessary to accomplish a wide range of household tasks.
