Help Adults in Your Community Learn Essential Digital Skills- Volunteer with LiteracyCNY to Bridge the Digital Divide!

LiteracyCNY is looking for dedicated volunteers to help adults in the City of Syracuse learn essential computer, smartphone, and tablet skills. Join us in our mission to bridge the digital divide by volunteering at various Syracuse Housing Authority (SHA) residential properties.

Commitment Details:

  • Time Commitment: Volunteer for 2-3 90 minute sessions per month
  • Location: SHA manages 15 residential properties offering low-income housing tax credits, public housing, and Housing Choice Vouchers. These locations serve populations that are significantly impacted by the digital divide.
    • Drop-in sessions are located in public spaces such as community rooms and computer labs. LiteracyCNY volunteers do not enter private homes.

What You’ll Do:

  • Assist individuals with beginner-level digital skills, including operating computers, smartphones, and tablets.
  • Support residents in navigating digital platforms and using technology to access essential services and information.

Requirements:

  • Complete our Digital Literacy Volunteer Training to learn about the program’s goals, the communities we serve, and how you can make an impact.
  • Be available for 2-3 90 minute sessions a month.

Our Mission is to improve the reading, English language, math and digital literacy skills of adults in Central New York. Our trained volunteers support participants in achieving their personal goals to fully participate in the community as citizens, parents, consumers and workers.

Description

Through the use of one-to-one tutoring, small group classes, conversation groups, drop-in or appointment-based computer help, and online learning tools and resources LiteracyCNY uses volunteers to help members of the community to increase their skills in reading, math, English language, and digital literacy so that they are able to fully engage in life as parents, workers, consumers, and citizens.

Please note: All volunteers must be at least 18 years old, fluent in English, and have completed high school or the equivalent. Tutoring opportunities are available in Onondaga County. Digital Literacy Volunteer opportunities are available in Onondaga, Madison, Oneida, and Herkimer Counties.
