Youth in the Antelope Valley are in desperate need of caring adults like YOU.

Many of the youth we serve have never had an adult really listen and care for them until they get a mentor. Often, they feel the world is against them. We believe in the potential of every child, and mentoring as a tool to help youth succeed.

This is an in-person mentoring program where you will spend time in the AV with your mentee exploring, talking, and learning about them. You might play basketball together, work on homework, or just try new foods. There is no set curriculum (don't worry, we have activities you can do if you get stuck) but there is a lot of freedom to do anything that interests you both.

What we're looking for:

  • Caring adults 21 or over who have reliable access to a car
  • Someone who is empathetic, a good listener, and wants to make a difference in a young person's life. You do NOT have to have lived the perfect life. Often youth learn best from mistakes we're willing to share with them.
  • A commitment of 2 hours a week for a full year

All mentors are required to complete a background check and training. Our Project Coordinator will be available for support throughout the program (from beginning to end).

Mentoring can make a HUGE difference in a kid's life...can you commit to helping out local kids?

Description

The Be A Mentor Program pairs caring adult volunteers from the community with youth in one-to-one relationships. Mentors give of their time to be a friend, answering questions, and providing guidance. Mentors come from a variety of backgrounds and occupations and volunteer their personal time to be a caring friend to a youth. They serve as a role model, advocate, and resource. The purpose of the mentoring relationship is to help youth develop their full potential, both in and outside of the classroom.
