Literacy Volunteers Tutors assist student in reaching their person literacy goals. Individual tutoring can be done either in person or remote. A student and tutor are paired and then can chose how and where to meet. Two hours of tutoring a week per student is required. A year commitment is required.
We have an in person lab at our office. Currently the lab is open once a week, Thursday mornings from 10-11:30AM. Students who have been assessed may come to the lab for help with their individual goals. The lab is staffed by volunteer tutors. This is a good opportunity for tutors who may not be able to take on a one on one student due time commitments or other reasons as the lab
In Order to Become a Tutor, a Candidate Must Be 18 years of age or older and have at least a high school diploma or GED/TASC.

Mission Statement
The mission of Literacy Volunteers of Broome/Tioga Counties is to assist adults in developing functioning literacy skills. This includes improving the student’s ability to read and write, perform basic math functions, and to use computers, as well as to speak and comprehend the English language. The service is provided at no cost to students. We utilize trained volunteers to provide these confidential educational services through a learner-centered approach that values and honors individual student needs and goals.

Literacy Volunteers of Broome-Tioga Counties utilizes trained volunteers to provide free confidential educational services with a learner-centered approach that values and honors each individual student needs and goals. We help adults gain the skills needed to earn a high school equivalency diploma, transition to post-secondary education and career training, enter the workforce, retain a current job or move to a higher paying job, prepare for the U.S. citizenship test, help their children succeed in school, and help their families become more economically stable.
