- Would you like to inspire hope and educate adults in custody about mental health issues?
- Do you have experience teaching a diverse group of adults?
If so, consider becoming a volunteer instructor for adults in custody at the Clackamas County Jail.
The volunteer instructor will co-teach 90-minute mental health and wellness classes for adults in custody in the Clackamas County Jail. The classes will be held three days each week, Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday, from 1:30pm - 3:00pm, and the volunteer will teach one (1) or two (2) weeks each month.
This opportunity requires excellent interpersonal and communications skills. Class participants include 10 adults in custody with a diverse variety of strengths, challenges, and learning abilities. These classes are intended to inspire hope and educate these adults in custody about mental health issues, increase awareness, provide personal insight, and discuss ways to self-evaluate.
Responsibilities include:
- Collaborate with co-instructor to plan and divide up the curriculum for each class.
- Identify and talk about accessing community resources.
- Understand different learning styles and literacy levels of class participants.
- Effectively manage class participants including exercising patience and remaining calm in stressful situations.
- Provide instruction using a variety of methods including group discussion, shared reading of materials, white board explanation, etc.
Curriculum includes a fluid set of topics (effective communications, emotional intelligence, personal responsibility, personal growth, self-care, empathy, self-compassion, self-management, self-talk, assertiveness, emotional abuse, anger management, problem solving, conflict resolution, decision making, stress management, building/rebuilding trust, goal setting, boundaries, listening, Jail Transition Center resources, and NAMI Clackamas resources).
Must be able to pass a Clackamas County Jail background check.
Must be willing to commute to Clackamas County Jail in Oregon City.
