Forging Opportunities for Refugees in America (FORA) serves 104 refugee students living in the Chicago West Ridge neighborhood by providing one-on-one tutoring in foundational literacy and crucial numeracy skills.

Students range from K-12 with limited or interrupted previous education opportunities. Tutors will be paired one-on-one with a student and follow an individualized curriculum for the duration of the two hour tutoring session. Individualized curricula consist of various online apps and workbooks to guide the content of each tutoring session, while the tutor is tasked with re-explaining concepts within the apps/ workbooks and encouraging the student.

Concepts covered vary by student, but common material consists of: reading a text out loud with the student and asking comprehension questions, practicing English-Language writing, assisting in basic grammar instruction, counting, addition/subtraction/multiplication/division and more.

The summer tutoring session will begin June 17 and run until August 16. Volunteers must commit to at least two tutoring sessions per week (4 hours of tutoring) during our regular time slots from Mon-Fri 9:15-11:15 am and 11:30-1:30pm CT.

Application: Please visit this link to apply through our organizational portal! After you complete an application, please expect an email within 4 business days.

Mission Statement

Our vision is a world where migrants in need are welcomed and empowered. Our mission is to ensure that refugee families are provided access to an education sufficient to prepare them to become economically self-sufficient and robustly engaged in American civic life. Our strategy is to be located in the neighborhoods that we serve to make daily educational services easily available to newly-arrived refugees.

Description

Forging Opportunities for Refugees in America (FORA) is a not-for-profit organization that empowers refugees by providing them with the educational resources needed to make a successful transition to the United States.

Due to the pandemic, we have shifted to providing online tutoring to 50 recently-arrived K-12 refugee students with a 1-to-1 student-tutor ratio. We provided intensive after-school tutoring for 30 recently-arrived K-12 refugee students with a 2-to-1 student-tutor ratio for two hours a day before the pandemic. We have been able to take on more kids and expand our services with the help of volunteers. Our curriculum is designed and implemented by a Ph.D. in child development.

All services are free. We currently have a long waiting list of students needing our services. Our ability to take on more students depends on volunteers!
