Located along the beautiful Cumberland Mountains, Cumberland Gap National Historical Park stretches across three states: Kentucky, Tennessee and Virginia. With over 85 miles of hiking trails, historical sites, overlooks, camping, and guided tours, Cumberland Gap provides opportunities for visitors of all ages and abilities.


As an Adopt-a-Trail Volunteer, you will select your own small section of the park's extensive trail system to maintain over time. Once you have "adopted" your section of trail, you will be responsible for keeping it accessible and free of debris while preserving its natural character.


Main Duties

  • Receive training from maintenance staff on the basics of trail work, the proper use and care of tools and equipment (loppers, hand saws, etc.) and any pertinent safety information before commencing Adopt-a-Trail duties.
  • Safely perform routine trail maintenance tasks using a variety of techniques, tools, and equipment.
  • Communicate regularly with maintenance staff about the status of trail maintenance projects.
  • Occasionally pick up and properly dispose of trash left on trails.
  • Report any obstacles or potentially hazardous situations encountered (i.e. downed or leaning trees, hanging branches) immediately to park staff.
  • Other duties as needed.

Qualifications

  • Work outdoors in various weather conditions.
  • Safely walk or hike for extended period over varying terrain while carrying tools.
  • Carry a park radio and bear spray (recommended) when working in the backcountry.
  • Wear closed-toe, closed-heel shoes (preferably hiking boots), a volunteer uniform (provided) and any required PPE (provided) when performing volunteer duties.
  • Follow directions accurately and perform work both alone and as a member of a team.
  • Behave in a professional, courteous, and safe manner while representing the National Park Service, especially when in the presence of park visitors.
  • Arrive ON TIME at the proper location for volunteer duties, as agreed upon ahead of time by the volunteer coordinator(s) and/or supervisor(s).
  • Respect the park's equipment and use it properly as demonstrated during training/orientation.
