ORGANIZATION: National Park Service

About the Park:

The National Parks of Boston (NPB) is the organizational framework for managing and supporting the collection of National Park sites in Boston: Boston National Historical Park (BOST), Boston African American National Historic Site (BOAF), and Boston Harbor Islands National and State Park (BOHA).

About Bunker Hill and Charlestown Navy Yard:

On June 17, 1775, New England soldiers faced the British army for the first time in a pitched battle known as "The Battle of Bunker Hill". Fighting took place throughout a hilly landscape of fenced pastures- while the British forces claimed the field, the casualties inflicted by the Provincial solders from Massachusetts, Connecticut, and New Hampshire were staggering. 50 years after the battle, the Marquis De Lafayette started the construction of a 221-foot-tall obelisk built entirely from quarried granite, dedicated as a lasting monument and tribute to the memory of the Battle of Bunker Hill.

The Charlestown Navy Yard built, repaired, modernized, and resupplied ships for 174 years. Operationally, the Yard saw many periods of expansion and decline as the policies of the United States changed over the course of two centuries. Technologically, the Yard saw constant transformation and acted as a hub of innovation. When the Charlestown Navy Yard opened in 1800, it serviced wooden sailing ships and employed tradesmen such as carpenters, ropemakers, and ship riggers. When it closed in 1974, the Yard had welders, electricians, machinists, ironworkers, pipefitters, and engineers. Throughout the operation of the Navy Yard, generations of civilian workers took pride in their work and service to the country.
