Every Saturday Borderlands Produce Rescue hosts weekly produce markets. At each market community members line up to receive 70lbs of fresh reduced produce for a donation of $15 to support the mission of Borderlands Produce Rescue.

Produce is delivered to the distribution site early each morning and volunteers begin to arrive at 6 am for the first shift. Produce allotments have already been assigned and will be available in the form of lists on site. The responsibility of morning volunteers is to sort the produce into boxes so it can be easily picked up by supporters.

For example, as part of the 70lbs of produce if we are providing 7lbs of green beans it will be your responsibility to bag 7lbs of green beans and add it to the produce box. If we are providing 15 heirloom tomatoes you will count off the 15 and add them to the box. And so on. Each location will receive approximately 5-11 variations of produce to be added to pick-up boxes for Borderlands supporters.

At the close of the market at 11:00 am, volunteers will assist with the clean-up of the location. The many churches and sites of the markets ask that we break down boxes, sweep the parking lot, and return the location to them the same way we received it in the morning.

Borderlands Produce Rescue trucks will arrive later in the day and pick up all left over trash and produce.

About BORDERLANDS PRODUCE RESCUE

Location:

270 W. Produce Row, Nogales, AZ 85621, US

Mission Statement

We aim to eliminate food waste by redistributing fresh produce to families in need.

Description

Borderlands Produce Rescue has been in operation since 1994 working with produce distributors along the Nogales, Arizona and Mexico border. Often grocery stores and big-box retailers refuse to buy perfectly healthy produce, which is then routed instead to the landfill. Since the launch of Borderlands, we have worked with hundreds of produce distributors to instead take in all of the fresh fruits and veggies, both protecting our landfills from harmful waste, and ensuring the food is able to get into the hands of the community.

Through our many distribution programs we are able to distribute over 30 million pounds of fresh fruits and veggies every year. Our programs are very limited in traditional funding; we depend on a large contingent of volunteers each week to allow us to host many distribution markets throughout Arizona. With increased demand for help we are in need of volunteers to continue to grow our programs and rescue more produce.
