Recruiting English Tutors for Spanish Adults in Chicagoland

Are you fluent in both Spanish and English?

We are looking for enthusiastic individuals to volunteer as English tutors for Spanish speakers. Your bilingual skills can make a significant difference in someone’s language learning journey. Join us in bridging language barriers and empowering our community through language education.

Schedule:

  • Registration period: Ongoing Registration
  • Scheduling: The volunteer may choose the date that they would like to begin tutoring. The end date will be 10 weeks (10 sessions of 1.5 hours each) after the start date. If you enjoy this volunteer opportunity and wish to continue, we would love to arrange that as well! The volunteer tutor will choose a range of times they are available throughout the week (this can include evenings and weekends). The coordinator will match you with adult learner(s) who are also available at that time. You will then meet with your adult learner(s) at set schedule that works for both of you once per week e.g. Thursday evenings from 7-8:30pm.
  • Time Commitment: 1.5 hours per week for 10 weeks
  • Tutoring is 1.5 hours a week (schedule flexible to best match tutor and student)
    • Tutor once a week for 1.5 hours

Responsibilities:

  • Tutor English to non-Native English speaking adult learners
    • Tutor virtually: Zoom or Google Meet
      • The link must be provided by a volunteer tutor
    • Tutor in person (Chicago-land residents only): Hanul offices, libraries, or public locations (private locations are prohibited)
      • Hanul Chicago office (60625)
      • Hanul Mt. Prospect office (60056)
      • Hanul Lincolnshire office (60069)
        • All Hanul office hours are Mon-Fri 9 AM to 4 PM
        • Tutoring in-person at any public location must follow COVID guidelines
  • Class will be 1:1 or small group ESL class
  • Minimum of 12 hours ESL tutor training required, training provided virtually and for free
  • Create creative learning sessions
  • Curriculum not required
  • Track students' progress and attendance
  • Foster and grow intercultural relationships

Requirements:

  • Must be at least 18 years of age and be a resident of the United States
  • Must commit to a 10-week semester schedule of tutoring for 1.5 hours a week (15 hours)
  • Prepare lesson plans for the class outside the 1.5 hours a week
  • Must maintain good communication with learners
  • Must reside in the continental United States

Description

Hanul Family Alliance was founded in 1987 as a Korean American Senior Center to meet the needs of primarily limited-English-speaking Korean elderly. Today, the agency annually serves over 7,000 individuals and families of all ages and ethnicities by providing a broad range of community services to meet the diverse needs of our community members. Our main office in Chicago, located in Albany Park, still serves as the comfort zone for our Korean seniors that reside in many different senior buildings in the North Side of the city. Since the inception of our new mission and vision, it also serves as a resource center for a wide variety of ethnic populations in the neighborhood. Our suburban satellite office in Mt. Prospect was established in 1999 to meet the needs of changing immigrant populations with rapid suburbanization. Most recently, Hanul opened up its third satellite office in Buffalo Grove to meet the needs of a rapidly growing Korean population in Lake County. Our three different offices conveniently serve our Korean American community spread throughout the Metro Chicago area.
