Join United Voices of Literacy'sReaders are Leaders program as a Literacy Coach for our exciting Star Wars-themed reading adventure! You'll guide students (our eager young Padawans) as they grow their reading confidence, fluency, and imagination through dramatic reading and storytelling.
As a Literacy Coach, you will:
- Work with students one-on-one and in small groups to support reading fluency and expression
- Encourage reluctant readers to find joy and confidence in their voices
- Help bring Star Wars-themed stories to life through dramatic reading
- Be a positive, consistent role model in a young reader's journey
Exclusive Volunteer Perk:
All Literacy Coaches will receive a one-hour coaching session ($80 value) in dramatic reading and performance techniques from Rashida Shabazz-a theatrically trained actor of film and television and a celebrated acting coach with the Tasha Smith Acting Workshop.Rashida most recently served as acting coach on One of Them Days, starring KeKe Palmer and SZA, produced by Issa Rae.
Time Commitment:
1-2 hours per week - 4-5pm PST Tuesdays/Thursdays. Volunteer for as little as 1 hour or the full 5-weeks of class.
We’re looking for volunteers who are:
- Enthusiastic and patient
- Comfortable reading aloud and encouraging others to do the same
- Passionate about literacy, mentorship, and storytelling
- Excited to work with students in a creative and engaging environment
Training Provided:
Yes! In addition to Rashida Shabazz’s masterclass, you'll receive ongoing support and resources to help you shine as a Literacy Coach.

United Voices of Literacy - Uniting Voices through Literacy Education. Our 3 out-of-school programs are:
- Readers are Leaders which empowers students to become confident readers and future leaders through a dynamic curriculum rooted in film-based storytelling and dramatic reading techniques.
- Storytelling Workshop guides students in crafting and sharing their personal journeys-from childhood to future dreams-fostering self-awareness, confidence, and the power of their own voice."
- MentorUpYouth - Provides a student the opportunity to step into their dream leadership career.
The goal for the Readers are Leaders programs is to improve reading and comprehension skills in struggling readers and to engage them in storytelling which opens their world to find enjoyment in reading.
