Project Open Hand’s mission is to improve health outcomes and quality of life by providing nutritious meals to the sick and vulnerable, caring for and educating our community.

As many as 50 clients visit our Oakland Grocery Center every day to pick up medically tailored meals and nutritious groceries. Volunteers help foster a welcoming environment for these clients and help gather their groceries from our on-site Grocery Center. Tasks in this department include helping clients select and gather their groceries, recording their grocery selections appropriately on menus and in the computer, and maintaining a safe and sanitary shopping atmosphere.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Help open/close the grocery center
  • Greet clients
  • Offer client the appropriate meal and grocery choices
  • Document the client’s selections in the computer
  • Gather meal and grocery items for the client
  • Assemble/pre-bag groceries or frozen meals for clients
  • Enter menu data into POS system
  • Sort and repackage produce and other grocery items
  • Stock fridges, freezer, produce, and dry goods
  • Maintain a tidy and sanitary grocery center space, including wiping counters between clients and sanitizing freezer handles/shopping cart handles

Qualifications:

  • At least 15 years of age
  • Proof of TB Test
  • Able to work well with others
  • Ability to lift and carry 20-30lbs

Dress Code:

  • Closed-toe shoes, full length pants (no shorts, skirts), shirts with sleeves (no tank tops)

2 Shifts

  • 09:30 AM to 12:00 PM
    Weekly on Fridays, or as needed Monday-Friday
  • 12:00 PM to 02:30 PM
    Weekly on Tuesday & Fridays, or as needed Monday-Friday

Mission Statement

Project Open Hand provides food and nourishment to improve the quality of life for the men, women and children it serves. Project Open Hand programs include: meal, grocery and nutrition counseling for people with symptomatic HIV and AIDS; congregate lunch and nutrition education for people over 60 years of age; meal service for homebound and critically ill people under the age of 60. Services are available to eligible clients living in San Francisco and Alameda counties.

Description

Founded in 1985, Project Open Hand is a nonprofit organization that provides meals with love to critically ill neighbors and seniors. Our food is like medicine, helping clients recover from illness, get stronger, and lead healthier lives.

Every day, we prepare 2,500 nutritious meals and provide 200 bags of healthy groceries to help sustain our clients as they battle serious illnesses, isolation, or the health challenges of aging. We serve San Francisco and Oakland, engaging more than 125 volunteers daily to nourish our community.
