Located along the beautiful Cumberland Mountains, Cumberland Gap National Historical Park stretches across three states: Kentucky, Tennessee, and Virginia. With over 85 miles of hiking trails, historical sites, overlooks, camping, and guided tours, Cumberland Gap provides opportunities for visitors of all ages and abilities.


Aside from being aesthetically pleasing to visitors and attractive to native pollinator species, the garden beds at the park's main visitor center also serve as a tool to educate the public . In March of 2023, the park formed a partnership with a local group, the Harrogate Garden Club , whose members have applied their gardening expertise to keep invasive plant species at bay, among other improvements.


Main Duties:

  • Identify, remove, and properly dispose of invasive plant species while preserving native plant species.
  • Depending on the season, other tasks may include mulching, thinning, planting, watering, removing trash and debris, light landscaping, creating/placing interpretive signs, and helping with garden-related events and interpretive programs to educate the public.
  • Positively interact and engage with members of the public and any other passersby encountered during performance of volunteer duties.
  • Safely use tools and equipment such as hand shovels, rakes, wheelbarrows, and gardening shears to complete volunteer duties.
  • Other duties as needed.

Qualifications:

As a Gardener, you must be willing/able to do the following:

  • Bend, kneel, stoop, crawl, dig, and pull roots.
  • Work outdoors in a variety of weather conditions.
  • Work as a member of a team, communicate effectively, and follow instructions accurately.
  • Behave in a professional, courteous, and safe manner while representing the National Park Service.


Please note: Government housing/RV pads are NOT available for this position.
