Do you love nature, believe in providing young people with joyful experiences outdoors, and want to pursue a career in nonprofits?

At the Alice Ferguson Foundation, we steward 330 acres of wetlands, forests, and Potomac River shoreline. We work to provide outdoor adventures to schoolchildren in Washington, DC, Maryland, and Virginia. Most of the young people we serve come from under-resourced communities, and they rarely, if ever, have access to the stress-relieving, healthy aspects of green spaces. Many of them have come out of the COVID-19 pandemic with anxiety and trauma. They often have more need than ever for the healing qualities of nature.

In outdoors settings, our skilled educators provide these students with STEM education and prepare them with knowledge to protect the environment.

Our goal is to serve thousands more young people each year, and keep our landscape wild and a habitat for all the animals - foxes, otters, beavers, osprey, and countless other birds, insects, and mammals. If you can help us by turning your talents to designing flyers, reports, handbooks, signs, and/or other publications/designs, that would be wonderful and you'd help us protect wild spaces and provide environmental education!

If this sounds like it would be fulfilling for you, we'd love to hear from you! Thanks for reading.

About Alice Ferguson Foundation

Location:

Mission Statement

The Alice Ferguson Foundation was established in 1954 as a non-profit organization chartered in the state of Maryland. Our mission is to connect people to the natural world, sustainable agricultural practices and the cultural heritage of their local watershed through education, stewardship and advocacy.

Description

The Alice Ferguson Foundation’s mission is to inspire environmental stewardship by giving people the tools to understand, appreciate, and protect nature. In 2024, the Foundation will be celebrating its 70th anniversary! We’ve impacted the lives of over one million students through our curriculum and programs, and trained over 3,000 teachers and park rangers to deliver high-quality, STEM-focused environmental education. We share the wonder of outdoors, hands-on learning with students and residents of Virginia, Maryland, and Washington, DC. The Foundation, located in Accokeek, Maryland at Hard Bargain Farm, includes a barnyard with farm animals and an organic education garden. The farm is nestled in 330 acres in Piscataway National Park, which was created in part through a generous donation of Foundation land. The Foundation stewards wetlands and the longest freshwater Living Shoreline in the nation, and holds classes in the Living Building, a state-of-the-art environmental center that is only the 13th project in the world to achieve the prestigious full Living Building Certification and LEED Platinum Certification. The Living Building meets net-zero energy, water, and carbon-neutral requirements. Our bunkhouses host visiting classes on overnight field trips, and our new educational pavilion is also built to green, net-zero standards. The Foundation is committed to inclusivity and providing access to nature for all community members, so the boardwalk spanning our wet meadow, our bunkhouses, our Living Building, and our educational pavilion are all accessible.
