Earthworks Management Program (EMP)

Save to Favorites

ORGANIZATION: National Park Service

  • A group opportunity. Invite your friends.

Petersburg National Battlefield contains dozens of earthworks: forts, artillery batteries, breastworks, salients, redoubts and redans. Our limited maintenance and resource management staff must often prioritize other areas of the park, causing some vegetation growth to go unchecked. As an earthwork management volunteer, you will assist park staff with the removal of woody vegetation, invasive species, and animal intrusions. Additionally, you may help control erosion by clearing brush and reseeding portions of earthworks prone to further damage.

Field Work will typically take 2-3 hours. Regular events will be occurring from August through November.

  • Identify and remove vegetation overgrowth and invasive species from earthworks.
  • Use basic equipment, such as shears, root clippers, rakes, soil aerators, and shovels.
  • Apply erosion treatments such as grass seed, jute netting, and hay to earthworks.
  • Follow instructions, be cautious and respectful to both the land and staff.

  • Communication skills
  • Ability to perform moderate physical tasks.
  • Ability to use basic tools and equipment, such as shovels or rakes.
  • Basic Technological Aptitude
  • Enthusiasm for working outdoors.
  • Ability to tolerate both warm and cold weather.
  • Ability to walk, stand, or bend over for prolonged periods of time.
  • Ability to lift up-to 40lbs for short periods of time.

Work will take place outdoors, on terrain that may be somewhat wet, muddy or slippery. There may be moderate elevation and slope changes. Rocks, holes, insects, weeds, and other minor hazards may occur with some frequency. Bug spray, appropriate clothing, and a water bottle are suggested. Water and snacks will be provided. This is a low-medium stress position.
