Empower Yolo is looking for Peer Counselors!
This is a great opportunity for anyone interested in gaining counseling, education, or social work experience!
Our volunteers have the opportunity to engage in peer counseling, community outreach and education, advocacy, and resource navigation.
Peer Counselors may complete their internships in the following Empower Yolo departments:
- 24/7 Crisis Line
- Legal Advocacy
- DV/SA advocates
- Youth/prevention Education
- Volunteer and Community Education
- Community outreach and engagement
- Shelter housing advocacy
- Human resources
- Resource Navigation
Eligibility for Peer Counselor position:
- 18 years old
- Submission of Peer Counselor Training application (look below for PCT details)
- Completion of 72 hour PCT (5-week hybrid course, details below)
- Show interest and passion towards supporting people in vulnerable and difficult times.
- Ability to work and show compassion towards a diverse group of individuals
Candidates must FIRST be accepted and complete our 72 Hour Fall Peer Counselor Training (PCT) prior to starting their internship.
Training program will certify individuals as state licensed peer counselors in the following topics: Domestic Violence, Sexual Assault, Human Trafficking, Stalking, Suicide, and Child Abuse. This training will also be discussing intersectional issues on: gender oppression, racial oppression, lack of accessibility for disabled folks, violence and stigmas against LGTBQIA+, and Mental Health stigmas.
Spring 2024 Peer Counselor Training Details:
- Start Date: May 11th
- 6-week hybrid course (Tues/ Thursday online, Saturdays in person)
- Last day to submit Apps: Friday, May 3rd ; Applications found at empoweryolo.org/volunteer

Description
Empower Yolo's purpose is to provide: (a) Twenty-four hour crisis intervention, emergency shelter, confidential counseling, training, legal assistance, and other services for individuals and families persons affected by domestic violence, sexual assault, stalking, human trafficking, and child abuse; (b) Resource centers for community services to improve the health, social, educational and economic outcomes of Yolo County residents; and (c) Community outreach and educational programs about available resources to promote health, stability, and self-sufficiency for individuals and families. All services are to be provided in a manner that appreciates, enhances, and utilizes the strengths of Empower Yolo's clients and honors their cultural practices and traditions.
