We will match you with an adult English language learner to hold online English lessons. You will meet 1-on-1 with your learner over Zoom. Lessons are 1 hour long and most of our volunteers meet with their learner once per week.
You do not need prior experience as an ESL teacher to get involved.
This role is...
- Transformative:You will work directly with members of the immigrant and refugee community. The knowledge and skills you provide can change a person’s life. The 1-on-1 format allows you to tailor your lessons to the specific needs of your learner.
- Interpersonal:You will build a relationship with your learner. You can work together as long as both of you would like to participate in the program.
- Intercultural:This opportunity creates a space for mutual development of intercultural competency. Both you and your learner will learn to communicate with people of other cultures.
- Be 18 years of age or older
- Intermediate fluency in English
- Desire to work with and build relationships with immigrants and refugees
- Flexibility, empathy, enthusiasm, and openness
- Willingness to examine one’s own privileges/cultural upbringing
- Willingness to be awkward, try new things, take direction, give direction
Responsibilities:
- Participate in 2 other facilitator's lessons before being matched with your own learner
- Plan lessons by drawing inspiration from weekly topics we post
- Teach at least 1 hour per week
- Enthusiastically motivate and gently push learners out of their comfort zone
- Spend 30-60 minutes on class preparation and reporting
- Communicate with our team via WhatsApp, email
- Respond calmly, humorously, and decisively to the challenges that present themselves

Torus was founded in 2020 by a refugee who was born in Kabul, Afghanistan, raised in Moscow, Russia, and lives in Portland, Oregon. Torus bridges gaps between people and communities by facilitating transformative experiences of language and culture exchange. We do this work through our seven programs. We believe in connectivity and a sense of belonging to a community for immigrants and refugees, as well as anyone who has been living in the US for generations.

- Must be at least 18
- Most of our tutors meet with their learners for one hour per week. We ask for at least a 5 week commitment when you are matched with your learner but would love if you stay longer.
