Do you love dogs? We need essential volunteer Puppy Raisers in our NoVA South region to care for our adorable, future guide dogs in training during the first14-18 months of their lives. Raisers provide the pup with the love, socialization, house manners and basic obedience they will need to succeed in guide dog training. You’ll meet other people who love dogs and enjoy giving to others, while learning life lessons and taking pride in knowing you’re doing something life changing!

We have several flexible options within puppy raising that allow for a shorter time commitment. No previous dog experience is required, and current pet owners are welcome. Raisers are provided with extensive support including a dedicated staff member, small group training classes, free veterinary care, a puppy starter pack that includes a crate. All raisers are required to complete an application and complete pre-placement training (virtual & in-person combination). Youth Raisers (12+) are welcome with the support of an adult who will help build their skills, drive the raiser to outings, and assist with raising responsibilities. Classes meet at various locations in the county of Prince William-- so volunteers generally live within an hour of here.

Explore our website to learn more. Please indicate if you are interested and we will email you with more information, including a link to join us at a virtual info. session to learn if this is the right opportunity for you.

About Guiding Eyes for the Blind - Patterson & Yorktown

Location:

611 Granite Springs Road, Yorktown Heights, NY 10598, US

Mission Statement

Guiding Eyes for the Blind is dedicated to enriching the lives of blind and visually impaired men and women by providing them with the freedom to travel safely with the assistance of professionally trained Guiding Eyes dogs, thereby assuring greater independence, dignity and new horizons of opportunity.

Description

Since 1954, Guiding Eyes has managed to thrive on goodness, even in the most difficult of times. We relied on the goodness of our loyal base of generous supporters, passionate staff and dedicated volunteers to come together to meet the growing needs of our diverse community of people with vision loss. Through this unwavering support and dedication, Guiding Eyes has graduated more than 10,000 guide dog teams. We believe in the powerful, meaningful change that our beautiful dogs bring to the lives of people facing the daily challenges that blindness and vision loss present.

It can cost up to $50,000 annually to train and care for a guide dog throughout its working lifetime with a person who is blind. As a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, we provide all services completely free of charge to people who are blind or with vision loss. At Guiding Eyes, we rely upon the contributions of our generous donors to fulfill our mission.

Guiding Eyes for the Blind has two locations: Yorktown Heights and Patterson.
