ORGANIZATION: School on Wheels

Are you passionate about education and want to serve as a role model? Join a community of compassionate individuals dedicated to making a difference in the lives of students residing in homeless shelters, motels, group foster homes, and vehicles throughout Southern California. Children experiencing homelessness need extra time and attention to succeed in school. We train and match our volunteers with students in their community, who then meet weekly to focus on learning. You can specify to work one-on-one with an elementary, middle, or high school student in person.

Change a life by applying at https://schoolonwheels.org/apply-to-be-a-volunteer/

Volunteers are asked to commit a minimum of 1 hour a week for up to a year. Tutoring usually happens on weekdays between 3pm-7 pm. Training is provided.

About School on Wheels

600 E 7th Street, Suite 109, Los Angeles, CA 90021, US

Mission Statement

To enhance the educational opportunities for children from kindergarten through twelfth grade who are experiencing homelessness in Southern California.

Volunteering to tutor children experiencing homelessness with School on Wheels is a one-hour-a-week commitment and no teaching experience is needed. Volunteering with School on Wheels is an opportunity to share something significant with a child and in return gain meaning in your own life. You can make a difference by supporting children who live in local shelters, motels, foster group homes, and vehicles.

Opportunities: We have both online and in-person opportunities in Santa Barbara, Ventura, Los Angeles, Orange, San Bernardino, Riverside, and San Diego ( online only ) counties. You can also volunteer at our Learning Center in Downtown LA with staff and other volunteers. Many children go to the Learning Center after school and throughout the summer.

The process to become a volunteer includes a few easy steps: fill out our application, attend a virtual training, provide two references, and complete a background check.
