About Imam Jamil Action Network (IJAN):

The Imam Jamil Action Network (IJAN) is a national organization committed to advocating for the freedom and exoneration of Imam Jamil Al-Amin (formerly known as H. Rap Brown), a human rights activist, former Chairman of SNCC and honorary Minister of Justice for the Black Panther Party. Imam Jamil is currently serving a life sentence for a crime he did not commit. IJAN aims to educate the public about Imam Jamil's life, his contributions to the freedom struggle of the 60s in the United States, and his current plight.

About Imam Jamil Al-Amin:

Imam Jamil Al-Amin, born as Hubert Gerold Brown, was a prominent figure in the civil rights movement and later embraced Islam, becoming an Imam (spiritual leader). He has been a vocal advocate for justice and human rights, but in 2000 he was wrongfully convicted and sentenced to life imprisonment; his life being one of constant struggle since his teen year and he has always faced harrasment from the police for crimes he never committed due to his struggle for freedom and justice. His case is currently under review by the Fulton County Conviction Integrity Review Board, and there is a growing movement to re-examine the evidence and secure his release.

About the Local Committee:

Jamaa'aatul Asr Inc., as an organization that has pledged its allegiance to Imam Jamil, is committed to contributing to the struggle by developing local IJAN Committees as part of its activities. The Deputy Amir of Jamaa'aatul Asr, Na'im Walid Ibn Rafiq Mujahid, will be heading the development of a local IJAN committee in Fort Myers, FL. This committee aims to extend the reach of IJAN's advocacy efforts and mobilize local support for Imam Jamil Al-Amin.

Location:

Mission Statement

Working locally to affect things globally. We will call people to believe in Allah, perform the daily prayers (Salah), to give Zakah, to fear Allah, and to have good behaviour. We will oversee the establishment of Masajid (Mosques) to establish Salah and as a nucleus for local mobilisation and activity. We will oversee the establishment of outreach centres for the purpose of spreading the message of Islam. We will oversee the establishment of educational programs for Muslims to learn the Qur’an, Authentic Sunnah, and their Deen. We will oversee the establishment of programs geared towards the removal of blight on all communities, maintaining the good that already exists within the communities, and the betterment of both the muslim and non-muslim community at large based on the guidance of Islam. We will go into agriculture and do business that would help establish self-sustaining communities with our own supply chains.

Description

We want to be a force of good in the community, to do Da'wah, and establish once again a Masjid to replace the one that was lost in Arcadia back around 2016. These efforts all began to coalesce under the umbrella of Jamaa’aatul Asr, an organisation that had existed in the 1980s in Baltimore, but now will reestablish itself in Arcadia, Florida 40s later. As of the end of 2021, efforts to establish a masjid continue. In the coming years, we hope to have efforts in Da’wah to Islam grow, and for a revenue stream to be created to help get the resources needed to build a Masjid and improve the Southwest Florida communities as a whole.
