ORGANIZATION: School on Wheels

Are you enthusiastic about helping students experiencing homelessness receive quality education and support in South LA ? School on Wheels is searching for dedicated individuals to step into the role of being mentors and a sense of stability for our students. For one hour, once a week, you can make a world of difference in a student’s life. If you possess a compassionate heart, and a commitment to making a difference, we invite you to join our team and contribute to our mission of empowering unhoused youth through education.

Role and Responsibilities:

As a Volunteer at School on Wheels, you will be pivotal in ensuring our Angeles House Shelter in South LA. Your responsibilities will encompass:

    • 1-2 hours of tutoring on Thursdays between the hours of 4pm-6pm


  • Make a tangible impact on the lives of students experiencing homelessness by contributing to their education and well-being.
  • Acquire valuable experience within a nonprofit organization.
  • Enhance your organizational, communication, and teamwork skills.
  • Connect with a supportive community dedicated to improving vulnerable youth's lives.
  • Flexible volunteering hours tailored to accommodate your schedule.

Mission Statement

To enhancing educational opportunities for children from kindergarten through twelfth grade who are experiencing homelessness.


Volunteering to tutor children experiencing homelessness with School on Wheels is a one-hour-a-week commitment and no teaching experience is needed. Volunteering with School on Wheels is an opportunity to share something significant with a child and in return gain meaning in your own life. You can make a difference by supporting children who live in local shelters, motels, foster group homes, and vehicles.

Opportunities: We have both online and in-person opportunities in Santa Barbara, Ventura, Los Angeles, Orange, San Bernardino, Riverside, and San Diego ( online only ) counties. You can also volunteer at our Learning Center in Downtown LA with staff and other volunteers. Many children go to the Learning Center after school and throughout the summer.

The process to become a volunteer includes a few easy steps: fill out our application, attend a virtual training, provide two references, and complete a background check.
