Horticultural Assistant:

Position Title: Horticultural Assistant

Job Summary:

The Horticultural Assistant will work closely with the Garden Coordinator and horticulture specialists to maintain the health and beauty of the garden's plants and green spaces. They will assist in various horticultural tasks, both indoors and outdoors, as the garden operations predominantly take place in the outdoor setting and require exposure to various climates.

Responsibilities:

* Assist in planting, pruning, and caring for garden plants, flowers, and trees outdoors, following horticultural best practices.

* Help with regular watering and weeding to ensure the garden's appearance is well-maintained and aesthetically pleasing, even during various weather conditions.

* Collaborate with the Garden Coordinator and horticulture specialists to identify and address pest and disease issues effectively in outdoor areas.

* Participate in soil preparation and composting activities outdoors to improve plant health and soil fertility.

* Assist in setting up and maintaining irrigation systems outdoors to ensure proper hydration for garden plants.

* Support the propagation of plants through seeding, cutting, and transplanting as needed in designated outdoor spaces.

* Assist in maintaining garden tools and equipment in good working condition, both indoors and outdoors.

* Participate in educational activities and workshops related to horticulture and sustainable gardening practices, which may be conducted in outdoor areas.

* Provide information and answer visitor questions regarding garden plants and horticultural practices during outdoor interactions.

Qualifications:

* Basic understanding of horticultural principles and gardening techniques; formal horticultural education or training is advantageous.

* Physical ability to perform manual tasks outdoors, including lifting, bending, and working in various weather conditions.

* Enthusiasm for plants, gardening, and sustainable practices.

* Strong attention to detail and a commitment to maintaining a clean and organized garden environment.

* Ability to work collaboratively with a team and take direction from horticulture specialists.

* Excellent communication skills and the ability to engage with visitors and volunteers in a friendly and informative manner.

* Valid driver's license preferred for tasks that involve outdoor errands or travel.

* Willingness and ability to work outdoors and exposure to various climates during garden activities.

As a community based organization, MSK serves residents and visitors of inequitable income neighborhoods in Ward 7 through a holistic and innovative approach to sustainability, education, community engagement, and social advocacy. MSK is committed to resisting and interrupting systems of oppression that marginalizes individuals and communities based on social identities.


Guided by a vision of making contributions towards a future where residents thrive in harmony with nature and in peace with one another. Through MSK’s advocacy efforts, numerous volunteers have responded to our call to action resulting in hundreds of hours invested into the advancement of underserved neighborhoods. The magnitude of such actions continues to evolve by specializing in supporting DC's advancements in sustainability at the local level through environmental projects, community action programs, and eco enterprises.


MSK is led by a diverse and talented Board of Directors that has a collective vision of providing culturally competent community services to positively impact the lives of socially disadvantaged District residents across multiple generations. MSK coordinates partnerships and collaborations that provide programs and services to District residents and Ward 7 families.
