You will be given 220 community service / volunteer hours for this position. Reports To: Volunteer Captain

Commitment: 7-10 hours/week

Requirements: Only serious candidates who can commit their time. Must be 18 or older.

Job Summary

The gates of the Garden City Bird Sanctuary ("GCBS"), located at 182 Tanners Pond Rd, would not be open to the public without the help of the volunteers and particularly the Assistant Volunteer Captain. As the Assistant Captain you will work closely with the Volunteer Captain to ensure this environmental gem is accessible to all who wish to enjoy it during the 'open season’ (the open season runs from the end of April through September, weekends only, 10 am-6 pm).

Responsibilities

Aide the Volunteer Captain with the following activities as assigned

+ Volunteer Management

- Meet with (virtual or in person) interested volunteers and decide upon whether they are suitable and reliable enough for the assignment

- Conduct a brief 'new volunteer’ orientation and obtain a signed waiver

- Provide keys to the GCBS to volunteers who will be opening the sanctuary, and manage volunteer key inventory

+ Scheduling

- Assist the Captain with the monthly weekend shift signups and the management of shift coverage

- Address open shifts due to lack of signups or when a volunteer cannot make their selected shift

+ Gate Obligations

- Sign up for two or more shifts per month, where you can conduct 'new volunteer’ orientation or help fill gaps in the schedule

- Make the decision to close the sanctuary for inclement weather and to notify the Volunteer Corps Members
