ORGANIZATION: Move For Hunger

Did you know nearly 1 in 10 people in California face food insecurity? If you’re looking for a way to give back and help feed the hungry in your community, this is a great opportunity for you!

Move For Hunger is a national non-profit organization that mobilizes transportation networks to deliver surplus food to communities in need.

We are currently looking for volunteers in the greater San Francisco, CA area to support our Multifamily Program by transporting nonperishable food donations from apartment communities to local food pantries. We have several apartment communities in the California area that collect food donations when residents move out, and they also host food drives throughout the year to help feed the local community.

To sign up as a volunteer with Move For Hunger:
- reply to this post
- we will email you an interest form and waiver
- watch a short training video on what is involved in the pickup/delivery
- the Move For Hunger team will add you to the list of volunteers and notify you when an opportunity becomes available to pick up/deliver food donations. The dropoff location is generally within 15 miles of the pickup location.

Requirements to volunteer with Move For Hunger:
- be at least 18 years old
- have a valid driver’s license & auto insurance
- have your own transportation that can hold between 5 - 25 grocery bags of food
- have a passion for reducing food waste and fighting hunger
- lift up to 25 pounds
- be able to scan/take a photo of the final weight receipt when the food has been donated and send it back to the Move For Hunger team

Move For Hunger, a 501(c) (3), is working to end hunger and food waste in America. Nearly 42 million Americans struggle with hunger while 35% of the food produced in this country goes to waste. By mobilizing moving companies, multifamily apartment communities, corporations, and volunteers, Move For Hunger has delivered more than 27 million pounds of food to food banks - providing 23 million meals for those in need.

  • Whenever food donations are in your area, each pickup/delivery takes on average 30-45 minutes total. There are usually 1-10 opportunities each month, depending on how many food donations we receive in your area.
  • You can accept or reject any food donations that we share with you. All pickups will be in the greater San Francisco area.
