Habitat for Humanity of Key West and Lower Florida Keys is looking for a self-motivated, passionate, and community minded individual to run their furniture thrift store. This is an AmeriCorps VISTA position, and Habitat can help you sign up to become an AmeriCorps VISTA member. The Thrift Store Manager will help Habitat for Humanity of Key West and Lower Florida Keys expand their capacity to make positive change in the local community. ReStores are a typical component of the Habitat for Humanity model because they provide a much needed revenue stream to help build and repair more affordable homes in the area. A ReStore would also provide a much needed service to our community by offering items at deep discounts so they go to homes and not into landfills.

Responsibilities

The Thrift Store Manager will:

  • Create and implement a business plan to open and operate a Habitat thrift store in the Lower Keys.
  • Work with partner agencies, local stakeholders, and community volunteers to determine the potential of opening a thrift store in the Lower Keys.
  • Expand volunteer opportunities and recruit new volunteers to ensure Habitat for Humanity is operating sustainable programs.
  • Explore local and regional funding opportunities to help ensure the financial sustainability of the organization
  • Create partnerships to address any barriers to accessing Habitat services
  • Implement new programs, initiatives, and strategies with the goal of increasing access to affordable housing in the Lower Keys.

Qualifications

  • Excellent communication and customer service skills
  • Self-starter with entrepreneurial mindset and knowledge or interest in business administration
  • Knowledge of and familiarity with social media platforms
  • Ability to create and follow a budget; some math skills
  • Ability to cultivate and develop relationships with donors and educate them about Habitat's programs and mission
  • Interest in serving the community and passionate about Habitat's mission; will act as an ambassador for Habitat
  • Able to lift about 40 pounds
  • Trustworthy and honest
  • Retail or sales experience a plus

  • Members can choose between a Segal Education Award (valued at approximately $6,495) to pay for a range of education expenses or a $1,800 cash stipend.

Eligibility Requirements

  • Be 18 years or older (no upper age limit)
  • Hold one of the following citizenship or legal residency statuses: US citizen, US National, Lawful Permanent Resident (i.e. Green Card status), and persons legally residing within a state. Examples of persons legally residing within a state may include those holding the following classifications: refugee, asylee, temporary protected status throughout VISTA service, and holding Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) status.

WHAT WE DO
Habitat for Humanity of Key West and Lower Florida Key is a nonprofit organization that helps families build and improve places to call home. We believe affordable housing plays a critical role in strong and stable communities. Habitat Lower Keys builds and repairs houses using volunteer labor and donations. Income-qualifying Lower Keys families purchase these houses through no-profit, no-interest mortgages. In order to qualify, the families must demonstrate a need for affordable housing, qualify for the loan, and be willing to partner with Habitat by completing homeownership courses and contributing 350 hours of sweat equity through work on their home or within the community.
