ORGANIZATION: FRIENDS OF MT HOPE CEMETERY

We are seeking Landscape Leaders to supervise groups of 20 or fewer volunteers working on landscape projects within Mount Hope Cemetery. Your team’s work could involve weeding, raking, planting, edging, picking up branches, or other projects, as they come up. Work hours vary depending on when groups have volunteered to work. Orientation is provided. Responsibilities:

  • Be familiar with the location of needed tools and water. Return all tools to the appropriate location when finished.
  • Ensure that all volunteers sign in and provide volunteer list for each activity to The Friends of Mount Hope Cemetery coordinator.
  • Get assignments from The Friends of Mount Hope Cemetery coordinator, familiarize yourself with the location within the cemetery, understand what needs to be accomplished, know where to put debris.
  • Review safety and health issues (for example, poison ivy precautions, proper attire, and access to bottled water).
  • Carry a phone.
  • Have availability during weekdays and weekends.

The mission of the Friends of Mount Hope Cemetery is to optimize the cemetery's potential as a cultural resource through education, preservation and promotion of Mount Hope Cemetery's unique heritage.

Description

Dedicated in 1838 in Rochester NY, Mount Hope is America's first municipal Victorian cemetery.

Set in a picturesque landscape shaped by retreating glaciers, the cemetery features more than 80 mausoleums, soaring Egyptian obelisks, winged angels of mercy, a Florentine cast-iron fountain, two stone chapels in Gothic Revival style, a Moorish gazebo, and infinitely varied tombstones marking more than 370,000 graves across 196 acres.
