Mission Statement

The Autism Theater Project (ATP) consists of young adults, with and without autism, who are dedicated to changing how the world sees autism and related conditions. Our goal is to show the world everyone has a voice. We show how people of all abilities overcome challenges, and make an impact on the world. And we inspire audiences to have faith in people of all abilities, including themselves. No matter our circumstances, we achieve anyway. ATP gives a platform to people who may struggle to communicate, or be underestimated because of their condition, to tell their own stories through professional productions that connect with all audiences. Our productions empower young people to overcome their doubts, achieve their goals, and connect with peers of all abilities. We also create educational programs on empathy, disability, and self-confidence that accompany our productions. Our goal is to bring these programs and productions to schools internationally.

Description

Our programs have included our play, "In the Life of a Child", drama workshops that teach social skills, and a YouTube series of interviews with inspirational members of the autism community and beyond. Based in South Florida, our programs have served children at Actors’ Playhouse Miracle Theater, Miami Children’s Theater, Alexander Montessori School, Kia Kidz Martial Arts Center, We Rock the Spectrum Gym, and Great Heights Academy. We also work remotely with young adult artists throughout the USA and beyond. And material from our play "In the Life of a Child" has been featured in Florence, Italy at the Teatro Della Pergola.

Centered on a nonverbal girl who dreams of a world where 'talking children’ could hear her inner voice, "In the Life of a Child" inspired our educational program, Playground Empathy, for advanced elementary students. And our latest project is "The Voice Inside" (TVI), an interactive streaming series for teens and young adults. TVI is created and performed by young writers and actors with and without special needs. And their own actual success stories which inspire the episodes.
