In the past, family members, friends, and clergymen gathered around a dying patient to offer their presence and support. Many patients today don't have family members nearby to maintain vigil. Families and friends of dying loved ones often struggle to cope with the loss of a loved one when they feel overwhelmed or scared.
No one wants to die alone, and with dedicated hospice volunteers, like YOU, and death vigil programs, no one needs to.
In a death vigil, volunteers provide support and physical presence to patients and their families in times of need. Taking into account that the needs and wishes of dying patients and their loved ones differ, volunteers will tailor their approach to fit the specific needs and wants of each family. As part of the vigil process, all or any of the following may be included;
- Being a calm presence
- Sitting with the dying person and their family
- Talking
- Listening
- Shared silence
- Healing touch
- Reading of inspirational text or scripture
- Requested rituals
- Inspirational music
- Lighting candles
Vigil volunteers will be an on-call. Volunteers have the option to accept or decline volunteer assignment.
Currently volunteer locations- Burbank, Downey, Fontana, Los Angeles, Norwalk, Pasadena, and Riverside.
