Recruiting Organization: Pittsburgh Community Reinvestment Group

Gain valuable nonprofit operations experience while making a difference as an AmeriCorps VISTA serving with Pittsburgh Community Reinvestment Group (PCRG). PCRG is a coalition of community-based non-profits working to achieve economic justice and racial equity through community revitalization in the Pittsburgh region. PCRG works at the intersection of policy, research, and advocacy. We advocate for the needs of grassroots organizations with local financial institutions, government agencies, and businesses. As an intermediary nonprofit, we offer resources and services to our coalition members to build their capacity to engage in community development projects and deliver access to capital for under-resourced communities while increasing residents’ quality of life. As the VISTA member placed at the PCRG main office, you will serve by furthering work that supports the work of community organizations around Pittsburgh to improve quality of life and increase access to capital/economic opportunity for under-resourced communities.

To this end, the VISTA’s core responsibilities during their service year with PCRG will include researching and developing resources to support PCRG’s working groups which provide tools for our members to fight poverty in their communities. They will also support and coordinate training and educational events, conduct outreach to members, and develop and implement a protocol for meeting the educational needs of our members. They’ll build PCRG’s and our member organizations’ capacities by documenting current programming, developing impact evaluation standards, and identifying key stakeholders and opportunities for partnerships. A successful VISTA will have strong people skills and work well in a team. Through this project, the VISTA will learn about community development and the role of local government, financial institutions, and nonprofit organizations in creating and serving communities.

The PCRG VISTA program has been successful in advancing the careers of its VISTA members, who are given opportunities for professional development (i.e., classes, conferences, etc.) while gaining experience in nonprofit operations. About 70% of VISTAs that complete their year with one of PCRG’s host sites go on to staff positions at community non-profits, while the other 30% have pursued higher education, often supported by the end-of-service education award. A VISTA year also provides benefits such as student loan deferment, healthcare, childcare assistance, relocation assistance, and more.
