Second Start offers free and confidential literacy support for adults. Adult learners meet one-on-one with volunteer tutors, who help them reach their reading and writing goals. We help people with literacy, basic computer skills, and math. We also have opportunities for drop-in tutoring for tasks such as filling out job applications. Volunteers with bilingual skills or tutoring/teaching experience are highly encouraged to apply.

Second Start Volunteer Tutors:

  • are 18 years of age or older
  • speak English well enough to communicate with learners and staff
  • successfully complete tutor training
  • possess excellent interpersonal skills, including good listening and communication skills
  • understand Second Start’s mission and work
  • commit to meeting with a learner 3 hours per week for a minimum of six months

We have a tutoring space on the 2nd floor of the Main Library in Oakland, and tutors and learners can meet at library branches throughout Oakland, depending on what is more convenient for the learner and tutor.

Thank you for considering joining our learning community!

About Second Start Adult Literacy - Oakland Public Library

Location:

125 14th St, Oakland, CA 94612, US

Mission Statement

Second Start helps adults improve their basic literacy skills in order to achieve personal learning goals and dreams.

Description

The Need for Adult Literacy Services is Great - In Alameda County, 19% of English-speaking adults do not have basic literacy skills. In Oakland, this percentage is probably higher. People who do not have basic skills might have trouble with filling out a form, writing emails at work, applying for a better job, or reading bills. They face health risks because they can't read information about their medical conditions.

Oakland Public Library's Second Start adult literacy program (established in 1984) offers free and confidential help with reading, writing, and computers for adults. We train volunteer tutors to work one-on-one with adult learners.
