I. Organizational Purpose and Background

Prescott Unified School District (PUSD) is a public school district over 100 years old that is committed to "Every Child, Every Day." Due to the disruption of schooling during the COVID-19 pandemic, many students are in need of behavioral and academic support. Some students lacked structure and predictability in their home lives while school was in virtual learning causing anxiety, stress, and unpredictable behavior in the school setting. Because students were separated from their peers during distance learning, they also missed out on social elements of attending in-person school. Our students need caring adults to teach them coping mechanisms and how to self-regulate their emotions because these behaviors interfere with student learning and academic success.

II. Project Focus Areas and Activities

A. Student Support: The AmeriCorps member will meet with and develop positive relationships with students and families. Activities could include reviewing classroom behavior needs, checking in on grades, attendance, and behavior plans, and setting goals. The member will also collaborate with site administration, counselors and classroom teachers to provide student support.

B. Education and Training: The AmeriCorps member will teach self-regulation and coping skills to ensure classroom success using methods such as motor lab, brain breaks, balance and alignment, and breathing. The member will also receive training on restorative justice, character counts, and peer mediation.

C. Create Systems: The AmeriCorps member will develop a social contract for areas of schools outside the classroom and assist with enforcement of the social contract in these areas. The member will also create systems to assist with conflict resolution by enforcing the guidelines of social contracts and developing social skills.
