Free Arts NYC empowers youth from underserved communities through art and mentoring programs to develop their creativity, confidence, and skills to succeed.


What is the Creative Lab?

Creative Lab offers teens an introduction to the creative industry and cultural institutions across New York City. From November to June, pairs meet for 1:1 sessions and group workshops. Workshops include how to: write a resume, best practices for interviewing, and how to build an online presence among other professional development opportunities for young people.

Mentor Responsibilities (November 2023 - June 2024)

  • 1-2 meetings per month (group visit and one-on-one meeting)
  • 1-2 points of communication per month to support career readiness skill-building (via email, phone, virtual meeting)
  • Monthly online survey
  • Help teens explore their career interests, build their visual literacy, and increase their networks

Free Arts Provides:

  • Dedicated support through periodic check-ins or as needed
  • Youth Development and Program Logistics trainings
  • Facilitated group workshops and career readiness curriculum
  • Annual volunteer appreciation events and access to ticketed events and other art opportunities throughout NYC!

Mentor Applicant Requirements:

  • Experience and enthusiasm for working with teens (9th -12th graders)
  • Interest in supporting career readiness skill
  • Ability to support in visual literacy skills
  • Available evenings and weekends for meetings and occasional workshops
  • Fine Arts background, creative experience, or familiarity preferred

Application Process:

  1. Submit Online Application by or before August 2023
  2. Interview with a Free Arts staff and submit resume and references
  3. Attend a Youth Development Training

Once Matched:


*Pass Fingerprint and background check with IdentoGo

*Attend a Program Training in fall 2023

*Attend Meet & Greet with Mentee in November
