Talk about taking the role of the Fresh Food Share Assistant to the next level; this opportunity does everything we do at our Fresh Food Share location, but OUT IN THE COMMUNITY! If you want to really see the impact we have on hunger, this is the role for you!

If you are a Spanish speaker, we would LOVE to have you in this role as most of our clients are Spanish speakers.

Distribution Assistant:

Those in this role are responsible for assisting clients to safely park at the correct table and helping to load their vehicles with the proper amounts of food. The traffic assistant will tell you how many households a given car will be picking up for, and you will help stock each distribution table with the number of groceries needed for each car. You will then help load groceries into cars, unless of course the client does not wish to be assisted. Between clients, volunteers are to wipe down the distribution table before staging items for the next car.

Product Loader:

This role necessitates working with the Distribution Assistants and Traffic Assistant to load the distribution table with the correct volume of all grocery products needed for each car. The Traffic Assistant will call out how many "households" worth of food are to be loaded into cars at tables A and B. For each car, the amount of each grocery item allotted on the menu is to be multiplied by the number of households each car is picking up for, e.g., if one carton of eggs and two gallons of milk are allocated per household, a car picking up for three households will receive three cartons of eggs and six gallons of milk.

Product Staging Assistant:

This role simply requires keeping the staging tables for both distribution lines stocked with plenty of each grocery item from the pallets so that Product Loaders can easily load their table with quantities needed for each client car as it pulls through the line. For cold items, we try to keep only a few cars’ worth of products out at a time while leaving the rest on a refrigerated truck to be handed down as needed. When these products need to be replenished, a staff member or Truck Assistant will restock the table with these items.

Truck Assistant:

These individuals will be charged with replenishing staging tables with cold grocery items as needed. They will communicate with other Product Staging Assistants to ensure that the staging tables for both A and B distribution areas are properly stocked with enough dairy, frozen items and low-temp produce at a time. It is important to ensure that there aren’t too many cold products sitting out at a time for food safety purposes.

Distribution Safety Assistant:

These volunteers are responsible for constantly observing the entire distribution site for and removing potential tripping hazards, disposing of trash, breaking down cardboard, ensuring no food items are ever directly on the ground and that no volunteer personal items (e.g., water bottles, phones, etc.) are ever on distribution tables.

Other Things to Know:

When you show up for your shift, our team members will place you in a role that helps support the effectiveness of our operations to ensure we can help as many people as possible. Please be flexible with your role preference as we often must make decisions based on need and not role preference.

A great deal of product will be unloaded in 15 minutes to serve clients so Please Be Aware and stay clear of the pallet jacks and moving truck gates while the staff moves quickly. They will then need your help setting up to serve clients.

Please share any physical limitations you may have when you arrive. We will do our best to match you to a role that accommodates this (Ex. Using a chair instead of standing).

Lastly, please leave personal belongings at home or in your vehicle as this entire volunteer opportunity is located in the school's parking lot.
