Our Opportunity:

This popular end-of-summer celebration pays tribute to St. Louis' storied blues history and showcases the talents of national and local artists. Produced in partnership with the National Blues Museum and the National Park Service, this free festival is the only one of its kind to take place on national park grounds.

Mark your calendars and plan to join us at the North Gateway of Gateway Arch National Park. The Festival will be from Friday, Aug. 9 through Saturday, Aug. 10, with an incredible Blues Brunch ( ticketed) on Sunday, Aug. 11 to cap off the weekend.

Volunteers can participate in several opportunities at Blues at the Arch. See below for more information about each position.

  • Set-up/Tear-down
    • Volunteers assist with the set up of signs, tents, tables, and various other elements of the event and/or tear down components listed above at the end of the event.
  • VIP Member/Premium Experience Tent
    • Volunteers assist with check-in of VIP members at the VIP tent and keep up the appearance of the tent for members on Friday, August 9th. This tent turns into the premium experience tent for Saturday, August 10th. Volunteers will be responsible for ensuring the tent does not get overcrowded and all refreshments are restocked as needed.
  • Gateway Arch Park Foundation Information/Merch Tent
    • Volunteers at the GAPF Information Tent will provide event and Foundation information to the public. Training will be provided on membership. Volunteers assist guests with purchasing Blues at the Arch Merchandise. Sample merch will be available to display but all purchases are made online using archpark.org or QR code provided at the merch tent.
  • Photobooth/Photographer
    • Photobooth volunteers will interact with the public to take photos at the booth and ensure the setup is working properly.
    • Volunteer photographer to capture moments throughout the event starting Saturday August 10th at 10 am.
  • Kid’s Korner
    • A section of the park will be dedicated to kids’ activities. Volunteers will assist with safety and oversight of the area and activities taking place. Background check is required.
    • Volunteers may also present kids’ activities such as making balloon animals or face painting.
  • Health & Wellness
    • Before the festival officially begins on Saturday, August 10, Citra Fitness & Movement will be hosting a free Sunrise Yoga class at 11:30am in the North Gateway. Volunteers will assist in set-up, tear-down, and ensuring all attendees sign required waivers and answer any questions visitors have.
  • Greeters
    • Volunteers assist visitors from downtown (4th street) to the North Gateway where the event takes place. Greeters will be stationed in various locations throughout the park and downtown. Be prepared to take visitor photos at the Arch.
  • Trash Patrol
    • We want to ensure Gateway Arch National Park stays nice and clean for the event and guests. Trash Patrol will be responsible for removing trash from the grounds and neighboring spaces during the event.
  • Blues Brunch
    • Sunday, August 11 is Blues Brunch at 612 North. During Brunch, Volunteers will staff an information table to share information about the Foundation and how interested individuals can get involved.

Volunteers at Blues at the Arch make an impact by crating enjoyable and welcoming environment everyone during the event.

This role is suitable for those with:

  • Respect for confidentiality of the Gateway Arch National Park’s volunteers, partners, members, and donors
  • Willingness to take initiative, and voice ideas

Commitment:

Volunteers must serve at least one shift between August 11-13. Blues at the Arch shifts include the following:

  • Friday, August 9
    • 4:30 - 9:00 p.m.
  • Saturday, August 10
    • 9:45 - 11:00 a.m.
    • 11:30 a.m.-4:30 p.m.
    • 4:30 - 9:00 p.m.
  • Sunday, August 11
    • 9:30 a.m.- 2:30 p.m.

*Note: Some shift times are subject to change. Be prepared to either leave earlier or stay later depending on the position and/or workload.

Site:

Blues at the Arch is located at Gateway Arch National Park in the North Gateway. Volunteers may be stationed in various areas around the park and/or asked to meet in various locations depending on position registration.

Roles and Responsibilities:

18 or older (younger applicants with parental/guardian approval may be considered). As representatives of The National Park Service and Gateway Arch Park Foundation, volunteers must adhere to the policies, procedures, and code of conduct as outlined in the volunteer handbook provided prior to or during training.

Physical Requirements:

Ability to sit or stand for long periods of time, lift 20+ pounds, and tolerate August weather. Accommodation can be made upon request.

Hours/Days of Operations:

Volunteers register for their shifts and manage their schedules using our online system, VolunteerHub, archpark.volunteerhub.com.

Training and Supervision:

  • All necessary information will be made available before and during the event
  • Additional training may be provided upon request.
  • Gateway Arch Park Foundation staff will be available for supervision and guidance.

Support:

Training for this position will be provided. Gateway Arch National Park and Gateway Arch Park Foundation staff will be available for questions and assistance as needed.

Management:

The volunteer program is co-managed by Gateway Arch National Park and Gateway Arch Park Foundation. Together, our program seeks to build a diverse core of park stewards and to enhance the experiences of both volunteers and visitors.
