Position: Volunteer Plant Care Specialist
Organization: Albatross Aviary - A Nonprofit Bird Rescue
Mission Statement: Albatross Aviary is dedicated to rescuing and rehabilitating tropical and endangered/companion birds, with a special focus on abused, abandoned, and neglected individuals. We provide them with a safe and loving environment, promoting their well-being and welfare.
Role Overview: The Volunteer Plant Care Specialist is a vital member of Albatross Aviary's team, responsible for maintaining and enhancing the plant environments within the aviary and habitats. This role is perfect for an individual with a passion for birds, their welfare, and expertise in plant care. The Volunteer Plant Care Specialist will contribute to creating a harmonious and enriching space for both plants and birds.
Responsibilities:
- Plant Care: Regularly inspect, water, and care for the plants within the aviary and surrounding habitats to ensure their health and vitality.
- Weekly Checkups: Conduct weekly checkups on all plants, identifying and addressing any signs of disease, pests, or other issues promptly.
- Plant Selection: Collaborate with the organization to select bird-safe plants that enhance the well-being of the avian residents.
- Plant Maintenance: Prune, trim, and fertilize plants as needed to maintain their aesthetic appeal and support their growth.
- Research and Education: Stay informed about the specific needs of each plant species present in the aviary, and educate staff and volunteers on their care requirements.
- Watering Schedule: Develop and adhere to a consistent watering schedule for all plants, taking into consideration the unique needs of each species.
- Outreach to Local Businesses: Reach out to local greenhouses, plant stores, and other businesses to establish partnerships and secure donations of plants and plant care supplies.
- Bird Interaction: Be comfortable working in proximity to birds, although direct interaction with the avian residents is not required.
- Collaboration: Work collaboratively with other volunteers, caretakers, and the board to integrate plant care seamlessly into the overall welfare program for the birds.
- Documentation: Maintain detailed records of plant care activities, including watering schedules, plant health assessments, and any interventions undertaken.
- Facility Enhancement: Collaborate with the Operations and Project Manager to suggest and implement plant-related enhancements to the aviary and surrounding areas.
Qualifications and Expectations:
- A passion for birds and their welfare.
- Expertise in plant care, including knowledge of bird-safe plant species.
- Previous experience in greenhouse or habitat plant care is advantageous.
- Dedication to Albatross Aviary's mission and values.
- A collaborative and proactive approach to volunteer responsibilities.
- Availability to commit 20 hours per month to fulfill plant care duties.
Time Commitment:
The Volunteer Plant Care Specialist is expected to commit 20 hours per month to fulfill their duties effectively. This includes on-site plant care, outreach activities, and collaboration with local businesses.
