ORGANIZATION: Voices for Children

Every year, more than 3,000 youth enter the foster care system in San Diego County. These youth have experienced abuse or neglect and it is no longer safe for them to remain at home.

While we can’t prevent the abuse from having happened, our volunteer advocates can make sure that youth have the services and supports they need, sooner, longer, and with more consistency.

Right now we have an urgent need for more volunteers, especially bilingual (English-Spanish) volunteers who can help bring both linguistic and cultural knowledge to these cases. By helping to bridge these gaps, advocates can ensure the youth’s voice is heard.

About Voices for Children

Location:

2851 Meadow Lark Drive, San Diego, CA 92123, US

Mission Statement

Voices for Children transforms the lives of abused children in San Diego County by providing them with volunteer Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASAs). We believe that every child deserves a safe and permanent home, and to that end, will review and monitor every court file in the system, provide a CASA to every child in the foster care system who needs one, and advocate to improve the lives of San Diego County’s foster children.

Description

CASAs can change the trajectory of a foster child’s life. They focus on an individual child’s needs, working one-on-one with a child or set of siblings. They provide a source of consistency and stability, visiting with their case children at least once a month. CASAs gather information from files and reports and communicate with social workers, family members, school officials, and other professionals in the children’s lives. They use this information and firsthand observations to advocate for the children’s best interests in Court, as well as in other aspects of their lives, such as education, health, and living arrangements. No experience is necessary! We provide all the training you’ll need, as well as a dedicated staff supervisor to partner with you on the case. With just 10-15 hours a month, you can make a difference in the life of a foster child!
