Mission Statement

Bottle Underground is a community glass recycling organization based in South Philadelphia that diverts post-consumer glass from landfills by upcycling, downcycling, and reusing bottles and jars, while educating our community about the lifecycle of everyday materials.

Description

In Philadelphia, up to 100,000 tons of glass are sent to landfill every year, including the glass in our single stream recycling. Bottle Underground is committed to creating a local, circular economy for glass.

Since it's founding in 2020, Bottle Underground collected and repurposed over 150,000 tons of glass from landfills. Our organization runs a free glass donation program to encourage community participation, as well as an open volunteer program.

In 2022, we used downcycled glass sand to support ecosystem restoration projects along the Schuylkill River. We also offer reuse program for local businesses, including Vellum St. Soap Company and Franklin & Whitman.

Become a volunteer and help us support a more sustainable Philadelphia while learning about circular materials!
