The Alaska Public Defender Agency is currently recruiting AmeriCorps members to serve as Client Services Navigators in both urban and rural offices across the state of Alaska. AmeriCorps members provide a vital service at the Agency by offering clients support and assistance in accessing community and social services. Selected candidates will serve a 12-month term. Members will serve from August 1, 2023 to July 31, 2024.

Specific Duties:

1. Meet with Public Defender Agency clients referred by attorneys and complete background interviews to determine clients’ social/economic needs. Client meetings will take place both in offices and in correctional centers.

2. Assist clients in applying for substance use disorder treatment and public assistance programs.

3. Connect clients with community resources in areas including housing; mental health services; employment; and food insecurity programs.

4. Advocate for clients with community resource providers and Department of Corrections officials.

5. Maintain professional working relationships with community resources and local service providers; coordinate services among providers as needed.

6. Maintain client records by documenting all client interactions and efforts made to connect clients to services.

7. Accompany clients to court hearings and appointments as needed.

Successful candidates have the desire and ability to advocate for individuals experiencing poverty and involved in the criminal justice system. Experience working with underserved populations is preferred, as is experience in a professional office or legal/court setting. Candidates should have excellent written and oral communication skills and be able to interact in a professional, nonjudgmental, and empathetic manner with a diverse range of clients and colleagues. A college degree is preferred, but not required. Candidates must have graduated from high school and be US citizens, nationals, or permanent residents. Due to agency restrictions, we are not able to accept applicants with any felony conviction, regardless of when the conviction occurred.
