Alternative Motion Project (AMP) is a small but mighty and impactful professional modern/contemporary dance company in the Twin Cities. Led by Co-Founder + Artistic/Executive Director, Joanna Lees, we need board members to Move BIG with us!

Board duties include:

  • Attend Quarterly Meetings & Review Meeting Materials
  • Assist with JumpstART (Annual Fundraiser)
  • Attend AMP's Performances (2-3x per year)
  • AMP is in particular need of marketing, development, fundraising assistance and expertise.

AMP aims to empower and connect artists and audiences through a wide range of highly physical, evocative, and collaborative contemporary dance forms. We achieve this through our performance and education programs that:

  • supports a local dance artists in their creative and professional growth by commissioning original choreography, performance and developmental opportunities. We build a community of artists, giving them a home where they can continue to develop their abilities and network with other local artists. AMP's collaborative nature also regularly features artists from genres outside of dance in nearly every show.
  • creates an inclusive and welcoming environment that educates and encourages students of all ages and experiences in an effort to advance the practices of contemporary dance for generations to come. This has included with development workshops and classes for established and aspiring local dance professionals as well as outreach residencies and performances with local public school students.
  • bridges the gap between audiences and performers to deepen understanding and appreciation of contemporary dance across individuals of all ages and backgrounds. We provide audiences opportunities to engage with all aspects of the artistic process (e.g., open rehearsals, "audience create-a-dance," behind the scenes videos, rehearsal vlog, talk backs , feedback surveys).

AMP was founded by Kristin Howe & Joanna Lees in 2011 to create professional opportunities for Twin Cities dance artists. Another foundational goal is to engage with audiences of all backgrounds so they may connect deeply and intentionally to the performance experience. AMP has:

  • produced over 13 mainstage shows with more than 40 new original works/films;
  • provided performance opportunities to 50+ local artists;
  • commissioned over 20 works by local choreographers;
  • offered a variety of workshops/classes for local professional and aspiring artists;
  • built and fostered community between local dance organizations through original shared events;
  • worked with 500+ elementary public school students and hosted educational performances; and
  • toured domestically to New York City, Louisville, Kalamazoo, and Eau Claire.

We continue to grow and build upon our long term goals:

  • To lead in our values in accessibility, particularly financial and physical accessibility.
  • To maintain and increase AMP’s presence in the dance community and the Twin Cities.
  • To make AMP more equitable, internally within the organization and externally within our activities and focus.
  • To remain flexible and adaptable to the ever-changing nature of our world and resources.

About Alternative Motion Project

Mission Statement

Alternative Motion Project (AMP) is a professional dance company passionately striving to create accessible, entertaining, and meaningful dance work throughout the Twin Cities area. Driven by the creative process, AMP gives an alternative dance performance experience to both audience and performer alike by creating a welcoming and inclusive environment. AMP increases communications between performer and audience member through an array of materials and discussions. AMP also encourages its company members to continually grow in their levels of training through quality dance performance of the choreography by its founders as well as collaborations by other up-and-coming artists. Committed to increasing dance exposure and education for people of all artistic backgrounds, AMP provides workshops, residencies, and performances based on the community’s specific needs.

Alternative Motion Project (AMP) was founded in 2011 by local dance artists, Kristin Howe and Joanna Lees when they recognized a need for more performance and educational opportunities for talented dance artists in the Twin Cities. In less than three years, AMP has produced five different shows, performed twice in the Minnesota Fringe Festival, toured to Louisville, KY and Kalamazoo, MI, successfully raised two separate Kickstarter campaigns, worked with 25 different artists, and began its Outreach program by hosting Creative Arts High School (St. Paul, MN) for an Educational Performance.

Move BIG is more than a tagline- it is AMP's philosophy. Move BIG means more than the large and virtuosic movement that AMP has become known for. Move BIG is advancing the art form of dance in any way we can. Whether it is through our choreography and performances, collaborations with other artists, engaging audience members, or education and exposure to those in need, we can come together as a community and acknowledge that we serve a purpose that is greater than ourselves.
