READ 718 is looking for volunteer literacy tutors for our in-person Summer READing Room this Summer Cycle (July 8 - August 15) at our Bed-Stuy location. Volunteers must attend an orientation and one training session. They must also be willing to undergo a background check and provide references.

READ 718 is a non-profit literacy center that provides tutoring and literacy workshops to low-income students in grades 3-8. We are looking for dedicated, reliable, caring, positive people who are committed to working with a child twice a week for 6 weeks (July 8 - August 15), excluding national holidays. Tutors will be provided with easy-to-follow lesson plans for each session, and will have access to reading specialists and literacy educators for questions and guidance.

Children who are behind in reading after grade 3 and do not receive the targeted instruction that they need simply fall further and further behind. Additionally, many children experience learning loss over the summer. READ 718 aims to provide students with high quality, supplementary instruction to bridge the gap between students who are struggling and their grade level peers.

About READ718

Location:

420 Atlantic Avenue, Brooklyn, NY 11217, US

Mission Statement

READ 718 is a Brooklyn based non-profit organization providing individualized reading instruction and literacy mentorship to low-income students in grades 4-8 who are reading below grade level. We know that strong literacy skills are essential for school success and lifelong learning, and that direct instruction is often necessary to support students’ literacy development beyond the early grades. READ 718 aims to help all children achieve success in school and develop a love of reading by partnering students with a committed and trained volunteer in a safe, supportive environment.

Description

READ718 offers individualized reading instruction and mentorship to low-income students in Brooklyn who need it. How the program works: - A student is referred to READ 718 by a teacher or school administrator. - The student and parent/guardian agree to have the student participate in tutoring sessions at READ 718 twice per week for 1.5 hours for a minimum of 10 weeks. - The student’s literacy skills are assessed by a certified reading specialist and an instructional plan is created. Contact with the student’s teacher is made to get any relevant information about the student’s literacy needs. - The student is matched with a dedicated, trained volunteer who will work on the identified areas of weakness, as well as engage in reading for pleasure with the student. - After 10 weeks, the student’s literacy skills will again be assessed to evaluate progress and determine if ongoing instruction is necessary.
