We are looking for volunteers to join our team to offer ongoing emotional support to adults who are affected by a terminal illness. This could be those who are terminally ill themselves, their family, friends, carers or those who have been bereaved.

This role helps to support people who have contacted Marie Curie through our national Support Line. As a Check-in and Chat volunteer you will be matched with an individual to offer them emotional support and a chance to chat freely about how they’re feeling once a week for up to 30 minutes at a time. Training and support will be provided.

What we need you to do:

Your role will include, but is not restricted to, the following tasks:

  • Have telephone conversations with matched clients for up to 30 minutes at a time, for a minimum period of 6 months.
  • Actively listen to clients and explore their feelings where appropriate with empathy and sensitivity
  • Direct clients to the Support Line for further information and support as needed
  • Complete necessary documentation as required by the service (e.g. Confidential Working Agreement, monthly feedback forms) and pass on appropriate service information to your supervising manager
  • Undertake both initial and ongoing training in line with the role and some independent study. This includes attending a virtual induction programme.

About Marie Curie

Mission Statement

The UK’s leading end of life charity, Marie Curie is here to support everyone in the UK through all aspects of dying, death and bereavement - and to fight for a society where everyone gets to have the best experience possible at the end of their lives. We support the NHS by providing frontline care. We provide vital bereavement support for family and friends. And we help the nation prepare for death, to help makes things better at the end. Our decades of experience mean we know what it is to die well, and what really matters. Our people have a passion for making sure everyone gets the best possible support - from living with a terminal illness to coping with bereavement.

Description

Last year we helped more than 69,000 people directly and reached over two million more. Marie Curie Nurses care for people in their homes, giving much-needed respite to overstretched carers. Our nine hospices offer the reassurance of specialist care and support in a friendly, welcoming environment - so people can feel safe and cared-for in their final months, weeks and days of life. Our trusted information and support line help people in their hour of need to feel reassured, informed and empowered to face what’s happening in their lives - whether that’s terminal illness, caring or bereavement. Our campaigns influence decision-makers and give a voice to people whose lives are touched by terminal illness, death and bereavement. As we face what’s coming in the years ahead, our leading research helps us understand more about what good end of life looks like. Our public awareness campaigns help change public attitudes to dying, death and bereavement so, as a nation, we can find ways to open the conversation and be better prepared.
