Community FarmShare provides weekly bags of fresh produce directly from Montgomery County farms to families experiencing food insecurity.

We serve families each week of the agricultural growing season which is about 24 weeks from late May to November

We are looking for volunteer PACKERS to help put together produce bags at our PRODUCE PACKING HUB at Common Root Farm in Derwood, MD. Each week we receive 9-12 different kinds of fruits and vegetables in bulk from small local farmers in Montgomery County where will pack them into individual bags that will be then be delivered to our families.

This is FLEXIBLE. There will be a SIGN UP GENIUS sent out in advance and you can sign up for shifts weekly, every other week, once a month, or just as your schedule allows!

In the past, volunteers have enjoyed this opportunity since it is a way for people to connect with other like-minded volunteers, while making a direct difference people's lives. Supporting our local small scale vegetable farms is another important part of our mission, so in this way, you too will be part of helping to build up a resilient local food system!

Community FarmShare also strives to build community and offers opportunities to connect with other volunteers and stakeholders through various activities. We look forward to serving our communities together with you!

About Community FarmShare

Location:

14975 Sugarland Rd., Poolesville, MD 20837, US

Mission Statement

Our mission is to reduce food insecurity by providing weekly bags of fresh produce directly from local farms to families. Our impact model: Food insecure families gain access to nutrient dense seasonal produce. Food equity - We recognize that low income families and communities of color disproportionately lack access to healthy food. We believe that "food is medicine" and aim to support families with health risks where healthy eating has a strong impact. Local table-crop farmers earn retail income. This is critical to our mission - supporting farms to thrive builds a resilient, local, environmentally conscious food system for all. Participating farmers use organic and regenerative farming practices, meaning our earth is preserved while food is produced. Local food means a low carbon foot print. We build community by providing resources and educational programs on the above and by having events where the community - food recipients, growers, donors, and volunteers come together.

Description

Community FarmShare links families experiencing food insecurity with fresh produce from local vegetable farms. We partner with local organic, regenerative, and naturally grown vegetable farms in Montgomery County which produce a weekly variety of fresh seasonal produce. Through generous donations from community members, we buy CSA shares (the weekly produce bags) from the farmers and provide them to families experiencing food insecurity throughout the growing season (typically about 25 weeks). This means each family in the program can rely on knowing they will be able to have healthy meals each week, delivered to their home by volunteers. We partner with other food assistance and social service providers to help us identify the families most in need of such healthy local produce.
