ORGANIZATION: Gunston Hall Historic Site

Do you enjoy being outside? Are you interested in encouraging the local bluebird population? Do you enjoy organizing projects and working with other people? Gunston Hall is looking for a new coordinator for our bluebird trail volunteers.

Responsibilities include:

  • Creating a weekly schedule for the team of volunteer monitors

  • Working with staff to train new volunteer monitors

  • Ensuring the boxes stay in good repair

  • Keeping project records

The trail coordinator spends 2-4 hours a week on project tasks.

During the past nine years, bluebird trail volunteers have seen the successful birth and fledging of more than 600 bluebirds, over 250 tree swallows, and an assortment of similar small songbirds.

Mission Statement

Gunston Hall's mission is to utilize fully the physical and scholarly resources of Gunston Hall to stimulate continuing public exploration of democratic ideals as first presented by George Mason in the 1776 Virginia Declaration of Rights.

Description

Today a history museum, Gunston Hall was once the center of a 5,500-acre tobacco and corn plantation. Its owner, George Mason IV (1725-1792), was a fourth generation Virginian who became a senior statesman and author of the Virginia Declaration of Rights, Mason was among the first to call for such fundamental American liberties as religious toleration and freedom of the press.

Volunteers at Gunston Hall annually serve more than 6000 school children and thousands of additional guests. They also help with archaeological work and behind-the-scenes projects.

This beautiful historic site is located on 550 wooded acres with a view of the Potomac River. The museum is on Mason Neck and is only a few minutes' drive from I-95 and US Route 1.
