If you are not already trained as a mediator, you can attend one of our basic mediation course this summer. There is an upfront cost for those that don't qualify for scholarship, but all volunteers have the opportunity to participate in our rebate program (rebate program has the same volunteer commitment, but is for those that do not qualify for a scholarship).

SCHOLARSHIP RECIPIENTS MUST:

  • Fulfill requirement after training which include observing a minimum of 2-3 mediations and mediating at least 3 times with MSI mediation staff before becoming a full roster member that can mediate with another volunteer.
  • Co-mediate with the MSI Program thereafter for 1 year, once per month until completing a minimum of 12 mediation sessions as a volunteer mediator on our roster.
  • Scholarship grantees unable to fulfill their commitment will be required to pay back 45% of the original cost of training.
MEDIATORS USE THE FOLLOWING SKILLS:
Interpersonal Skills
- Be able Build Trust, Listening skills- Need to collect information and note what is important to the parties, Communication skills- Ability/skill to share information appropriately, Neutrality- Must learn to put your personal opinions/feelings aside and use neutral language to help the parties meet theirneeds and allow the parties to determine what will work for them (self-determination) even if it is not something you agree with., Empathy - showing understanding, Honesty/Sincerity/Respect- not enough to just 'be’ honest...must show it, Integrity- maintaining confidentiality and mediator code of conduct, Perception- Determine parties’ willingness, Negotiation skills- Ability to reframe the issues & Internal control - Patience, Humility

Mediators are neutral and do not make decisions for people or give them advice. We listen, ask questions, try to understand their story and what they want to get out of the process.

  • Have answers about what will work for the parties
