Mission Statement

Create and leverage an annual world-class public sculpture exhibition throughout the streets of Milwaukee that fosters community engagement and spurs economic activity.

Description

Sculpture Milwaukee (SMI) transforms downtown Milwaukee’s cultural landscape with an annual, outdoor exhibition of world-renown sculpture, serving as a catalyst for supporting artists, making art accessible to a wide audience, and fostering cultural dialogue. SMI is reimagining public spaces with iconic sculptures that resonate with the public and are accessible to everyone.

Since 2017, SMI has hosted 8 world-class exhibitions of over 100 sculptures in the streets of downtown Milwaukee. Free and open to diverse audiences 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, rotating exhibitions bring to life public spaces and invite viewers into new conversations about art and culture. Capturing the natural flow of traffic through our public exhibition space, engagement happens by the public even when it is not intended. A big part of having accessible art in the streets is welcoming people into new conversations they may not have participated in before, making them feel they can be part of contemporary art culture; particularly for those who don’t necessarily seek art out. We are beautifying our city while engaging residents and visitors, giving them tools to appreciate contemporary art and access to a global arts community.
