Tutors guide clients through materials, functioning as a guide on the side. The priority during tutor sessions will be developing study skills, encouraging students, and establishing self-sufficiency.
Tutors are not expected to be experts in the field, nor do they need to know everything about the subject being reviewed. Tutors are encouraged to say, "I don't know, but let's figure it out together," and look things up when appropriate. The best tutors are well-versed in independent study skills and learning techniques. The primary object of sessions is to help the client build confidence in their ability to learn.
Tutors are not expected to provide any material. The client or adult education manager will provide all study/learning material. If tutors find helpful resources or material, tutors are asked to consult with the Adult Education Program Manager before presenting it to the client.
Establishing a connection with the client is vital to a successful tutor session. Tutors will introduce themselves and spend 6-10 minutes getting to know the client (small talk). Tutors must be prepared to share casual information about themselves with the client. Tutors should maintain the confidentiality of client information to non-MetroMin staff and consult with the Adult Education Program Manager if any concerns arise about the client.
The material covered during tutor sessions will include basic math, science, American history, and vocational topics (for example, CNA Exam Prep). Tutor sessions will be conducted in a quiet space on Metro's Tampa Campus and last between 1 to 2 hours.
After each tutor session, tutors will provide Adult Education Program Manager with brief detailed synapses of the tutor session.

About Metropolitan Ministries

Location:

120 E Ross Ave, Tampa, FL 33602, US

Mission Statement

To care for the homeless and those at risk of becoming homeless in our community through services that alleviate suffering, promote dignity, and instill self-sufficiency...as an expression of the ongoing ministry of Jesus Christ.

Description

For over 40 years, Metropolitan Ministries has served poor and homeless men, women, and children in the Tampa Bay region. The Ministries has gone from a single room food pantry, to one of America's most effective and innovative caregivers. Serving 100-150 families daily through Outreach and Prevention Services, the Ministries remains committed to breaking the cycle of poverty...today, tomorrow and always. The facilities include Uplift U residential housing, a residence day care, an elementary school, adult training opportunities, a full-service kitchen that prepares 2,200 meals per day 7 days a week, and a thrift store to provide clothing for those in need and to the general public. Metropolitan Ministries also manages Compassion + Action, a collaborative that mobilizes partnerships across four counties to meet the growing need in local neighborhoods and transform the lives of families in crisis.
